What Is an 'On The Fly' Extension Link?
An 'On The Fly' extension link is a precision-machined bracelet component that adds a small amount of length to your watch bracelet - typically 3–4mm - without requiring a watchmaker. Follow the four steps below to install yours at home.
What You'll Need
- Your Steel Reef 'On The Fly' extension link (supplied with screw and spring bar)
- A spring bar tool or small pointed tool
- A screwdriver of the appropriate size
- A clean, flat surface to work on (a microfibre cloth works well)
Step One: Remove the Bracelet from the Clasp
Begin by carefully removing the bracelet from the clasp. This can be done by gently releasing the spring bar located within the clasp. Use a spring bar tool or a small, pointed tool to ease the process.
Step Two: Remove the Last Bracelet Link
Next, focus on the last link of the bracelet that was connected to the clasp. Use a screwdriver of the appropriate size to carefully remove this link.
Step Three: Attach the Extension Link
Align the new extension link with the bracelet's end where the last link was removed, ensuring it matches the direction of the bracelet's links. Attach it securely to the bracelet using the supplied screw.
Step Four: Reattach the Bracelet to the Clasp
Finally, reattach the bracelet - now with the new extension link - back to the clasp. Use the supplied spring bar to secure the connection.
Troubleshooting
- Extension link won't align: Check that the link is oriented in the same direction as the rest of the bracelet links before attaching the screw.
- Spring bar won't seat: Ensure you're using the supplied spring bar and that both ends are fully compressed before releasing into the clasp.
- Screw won't tighten: Make sure you're using the correct screwdriver size to avoid stripping the head.
